After 24 years, HBPW Finance Director Freda Velzen is about to embark on her next great adventure: retirement. Freda began at HBPW as Accounting Manager and was quickly promoted to Finance Director. In her years of service, she has seen a lot of change and growth, and it makes her proud to be a part of the organization and the Holland community.

Freda always knew she wanted to serve a nonprofit or community-oriented organization, and when an opportunity to work for HBPW came up, she was excited to pursue the venture. Freda had past business connections from the Holland community and welcomed the opportunity to serve here.

“I love working at BPW where I can utilize my knowledge, skills and abilities in ways that contribute to a vibrant, diverse, and growing community,” Freda said. Freda is a certified public accountant and a chartered global management accountant. She continues her education each year to maintain her certifications.

Freda is looking forward to moving to a cabin in Northern Michigan with her husband and enjoying the peacefulness of the great outdoors. The cabin is located on a river, where she can get her hands dirty splitting wood or relax knitting in front of the view.

“I have really enjoyed my time at BPW, Freda said. “My fellow employees are a great group of skilled and dedicated people and it has been an absolute pleasure working with them.” October 28th will be Freda’s last day at Holland Board of Public Works.

From all of us at HBPW, thank you Freda for your years of service and friendship!

Career Focus: What would be your advice to students who are about to graduate?

Utilize every opportunity presented to you to travel, participate in team learning experiences, take a special skills workshop for at least a semester or a summer. Be open to careers that may be technical in nature. Also, try to experience as much culturally diverse education as you can.
