Melting Snow for Small Business

Holland’s snowmelt system draws people downtown during the winter, helping build community. “I love it in downtown Holland,” The Globe owner, Bob Schulze said, “The community here is lively all year long, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

You can stop by and find Bob most days at his specialty eyewear store, The Globe. He would be happy to show you around the store or converse about the happenings in the local arts community. The Globe and Bob are a unique part of the puzzle that makes downtown Holland special.

Bob debated between several cities when deciding where to open his specialty eyewear store before landing in Holland. The snowmelt was one factor in his decision. “Holland is a vibrant, year-round community,” Bob said, “It’s rare for a lakeshore community to be so active in the winter and I think the snowmelt factors into that.” Business remains steady during the winter months at The Globe and for many of the downtown businesses.

Bob opened his business on 8th Street in 2002, and then moved to a larger location on 8th near JP’s Coffee in 2004. “The snowmelt has been such an advantage,” he said. “I don’t need to show up extra early in the winter to shovel the sidewalks.” The snowmelt offers clear parking, driving, and walking paths throughout downtown Holland. Shoppers don’t need to worry about trudging through feet of snow between stores or be concerned about slips and falls. The sidewalks work well for strollers and walkers, offering a safe path for both young and old, and presenting an escape from the snowy streets and parking lots of winter.
